Paper Man

“Paper Man” is a web-based game that revolves around self-identity and the conflicting pressure from society. The theme is inspired by the movie "Farewell my Concubine" by Chen Kaige, where the main character, Chen Dieyi, undergoes a forced self-identity transformation (from identifying as male to female) only to realize before his death who he really is. 

The concept of the game is based around speech and voice recognition, where the player navigates the fictive Paper World that imposes its citizen to adopt one universal identity. The player could react submissively to obtain good jobs in consequence of a sanity level’s lost, or the player can refuse to bend over for the standard in consequence of a refusal to special jobs. Different endings will then open where the players will: forget their original identity, be accorded the right to keep their original identity or be able to discover the underlying structure/ purpose of the Paper World. “Paper Man” ironizes the universality so commonly seen in designs and the underlying privileges universal standards give to the mainstream group.
